Let’s attempt to identify what makes them good bosses
Almost anywhere you look, people are talking about “leadership” … defining leadership, talking, explaining and preaching about leadership… and most importantly how to be a leader. Research, studies, books, videos, courses and seminars abound. And let us not forget the coaches and mentors that coach people in becoming leaders. Then there is the importance of leadership, the styles of leadership, the elements of leadership and the levels of leadership.
Leadership in its simplest form is the ability in influencing people to follow. Anyone who can influence people to follow them, by definition, has leadership qualities. Leaders though need people that follow them, so here is my question: What makes a good boss?
Think with me about our history of past bosses and let’s attempt to identify what made some of them good bosses. What do they have in common. If you are a leader or aspire to be one, here is a summary of my top seven criteria that will help you be a good boss:
- Genuine relationships make up for a boss that is real. This will include a leader that you can trust. An honest boss that honors commitments, admits when wrong and is of consistent behavior and actions.
- A boss that has profound respect for people and creates a safe environment for work. He/she intervenes when needed and can resolve issues promptly and even “prune” team members when necessary.
- Good communication skills, approachable and with an open-door policy. Bosses can be demanding, but always open-minded, welcoming and yes, friendly too.
- A boss that cares about people’s career and helps them develop their skills. Sincere, frank and serious about building team members skills.
- An ability to inspire people to stretch and reach higher without stressing them. This is not about extrovert or introvert. Energy is contagious and is often needed together with calmness in balance.
- A boss that establishes clear and SMART objectives (SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timebound), recognizes achievements and rewards performance.
- A boss with empathy who will defend his people when needed. My list may be long or short, but never mind the length. It is important to reflect on what we can learn from the good bosses and the ones that were a bit not so good…. especially as we start a new year.
